The Community of Caring

The Community of Caring (COC) was founded in 1980 by the Rev. Charles and Mother Mary Beth Kennedy to respond to unmet human needs:  hunger, homelessness, illness and others.

The agency was incorporated in 1983 as a non-profit human services organization that has a board of directors, staff, budgets, audits and other characteristics of a formal organization.  There is also the informal level of COC, in which members simply pledge to do an act of kindness every day.

Our philosophy is based on the premise that kindness and caring remain relevant in today's world.  We feel that God's love flowing through others can change the world.  We believe that love heals broken people, transforms shattered lives and empowers individuals to become positive forces for good.

Services are given based on need and without regard to race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

A copy of the Annual Report may be obtained by calling or writing the main office.

Community of Caring is committed to accountability and good stewardship of resources.  Your donation will be used in the way you designate, and will go to help the people who need it, not to administrative overhead or publicity.  An audit is done each year by an independent CPA.  The agency's fiscal year runs from July 1 - through June 30.  The audit may be viewed at the main office on request.

There are two distinct components to COC:

Domestic Activities

  • Residence for homeless

  • Hot meal program

  • Food Pantry

  • Transitional housing units

  • Meeting needs for area residents as they arise

International Activities
  • COC has members in North and South America, the Caribbean and several African countries.
  • Local branches are autonomous and determine and implement activities depending on the needs in their communities.
  • COC is registered with US Agency for International Development as Private Voluntary Organization (PVO)  (The registration process took over a year; it is both lengthy and selective.)
  • We send shipments of food, clothing, medicines and other necessities on a regular basis.
  • COC sponsors annual "Mission of Mercy" trips to Haiti, Dominican Republic and Africa.
